Strategies for Organizing Children’s rooms

Ask any parent and more often than not, I’ll bet they will tell you that keeping their children’s rooms and play areas organized is a challenge. It seems in today’s world we have less time and more stuff, and the kids room is certainly no exception.

Here are some tips and strategies that can help parents in getting and keeping their children’s rooms and play areas organized and functional.

Let’s talk strategy first, after all these little ‘Mini Me’s’ learn fast and they learn from their parents, so parents should keep in mind five little tips:

1. Set an example. If your space is tidy they can learn from it.
2. Talk straight. How are they going to know what your expectations are if you don’t tell them.
3. Make play out of it. Have a race, have a prize, and have fun!
4. Make them your partner. Ask their opinions and get them involved.
5. Stick to your guns. If you don’t enforce rules they soon learn there aren’t any.

As for making it easy for kids to stay organized, consider these tips:

- Provide low level closet rods so kids can reach their clothes and put them away.
- Put mostly used items on lower levels.
- Use big, bold and colorful labels and pictures to grab their attention.
- Remove closet doors and obstacles from their path.
- Rotate and store out-of-season clothes and less-used toys.
- Set limits on number of toys and clothes so they can focus, rather than get distracted by too many choices.

As you see, many of the basic organizing principals apply for kids too. Keep ‘hot’ items close, make things easy to put away, limit the amount of things and label well.

Last but not least remember to have these basics in place:

Shelves for books
Bins for different sized toys
Low rod in closet
Labels
Coat hooks for jackets, robes and equipment
Dirty clothes hamper
Bin/Box for outgrown clothing
Bins for seasonal clothes
Storage for Toy Library
