My House is Driving Me Crazy

While we may be fully aware that our house is driving us crazy, it’s helpful to be able to pinpoint exactly what’s not functioning well. Idon’t know about you but sometimes I need to see things spelled out in black and white to fully grasp the reality of a situation.  It took me years to finally create a solution for having my keys in a handy spot. Why? Probably because I couldn’t separate one area of frustration from another. Probably because I was feeling overwhelmed.

Being disorganized at home can affect the whole of your life. It creates on-going feelings of frustration and exhaustion. It prevents us from fully enjoying our homes as a calm space and a haven of retreat from a busy world. Tempers flare and relationships suffer as people trip over each others’ belongings.  Creative energy is blocked because of the visual distractions and disorder.

Dr. Isaac Eliaz, MD, MS, LAc says this:

“Over time, being surrounded by clutter slows us down, makes us feel mentally and physically fatigued, and causes stress and anxiety. If we have a cluttered, disorganized living space, letting go of the stresses of work, finances, relationships, and other areas of our lives can be virtually impossible….. Just sitting in a cluttered room can create stress, as the clutter provides a great deal of information for the eyes to process and visual reminders of how much work is left unfinished. This constant, low-grade stress can subtly and steadily drain our energy, leaving us overwhelmed, exhausted, and ultimately, physically ill.”  (read more)

I Love My House

On the flip side of this picture, is a home that is an oasis of calm and one that functions well on a day-to-day basis. Can you picture it?

Imagine feeling a sense of appreciation and calm as you walk through the door to your home. You love the way your place looks and how it functions. You’ve kept those possessions that are important to you and/or serve a purpose. They all have a “home” so you’re able to find what you need when you need it. You’ve gotten better at scheduling so family life is smoother. Your filing system works like a charm and bills are getting paid on time. Supper isn’t quite the ordeal it once was and you’re making some time for yourself. De-cluttering your space has opened the door to considering what else is cluttering up your life. You feel more in control than you have in a long time.  It’s not perfect and it doesn’t have to be. It’s just exactly what you need. (read more)
